Shocking New Role Found for the Immune System: Controlling Social Interactions
It's a stunning discovery that overturns decades of textbook teaching: researchers at the School of Medicine have determined that the brain is directly connected to the immune system by vessels previously thought not to exist. “I really did not believe there were structures in the body that we were not aware of. I thought the body was mapped,” said Jonathan Kipnis, a professor in the Department of Neuroscience and director of the University's Center for Brain Immunology and Glia. How these vessels could have escaped detection when the lymphatic system has been so thoroughly mapped throughout the body is surprising on its own.
In a startling discovery that raises fundamental questions about human behavior, researchers at the University of Virginia School of Medicine have determined that the immune system directly affects – and even controls – creatures' social behavior, such as their desire to interact with others.
So could immune system problems contribute to an inability to have normal social interactions? The answer appears to be yes, and that finding could have significant implications for neurological diseases such as autism-spectrum disorders and schizophrenia.
“The brain and the adaptive immune system were thought to be isolated from each other, and any immune activity in the brain was perceived as sign of a pathology. And now, not only are we showing that they are closely interacting, but some of our behavior traits might have evolved because of our immune response to pathogens,” explained Jonathan Kipnis, chair of UVA's Department of Neuroscience. “It's crazy, but maybe we are just multicellular battlefields for two ancient forces: pathogens and the immune system. Part of our personality may actually be dictated by the immune system.”

My Husband and I have been very sick for several years, but we were unable to find out what was wrong with us. We live in a rural area and have been subjected to many hundreds of tick bites since 1995. By 2012 we were both suffering from headaches, pain in every part of our bodies, fatigue, rashes and several other weird symptoms.
By 2013 I went to the doctor with depression which I couldn't understand because I considered I had no reason to be depressed. Soon after I went back with a rash which the doctor thought may be chicken pox, the next week I returned with mastitis.
I had headaches and pains and was consistently tired. The doctor then asked me what I thought was causing all these symptoms and I replied that I thought it might be something to do with the tick bites I had received over the years. He said that it could be the ticks and gave me a month's supply of Doxycycline and I felt better for a little while after that. In the meantime, my husband's health was becoming worse as he could barely walk from his bed to the bathroom or a lounge chair and was unable to work for 6 months.
When all the symptoms returned I did some research and contacted the Karl McManus Lyme disease Foundation and asked if there was a doctor near where I live that could help us. My husband and I went to the recommended doctor and after a series of questions he told us that the only way to be sure his clinical diagnoses was correct was to send our bloods overseas for a laboratory diagnosis.
The blood results confirmed the doctor's diagnosis as Borrelia, otherwise known as Lyme disease for both of us, while my husband had another bacterium as well, known as Bartonella and we commenced antibiotics.
By that stage I was having trouble walking and my husband had developed swelling in the brain with associated changes in personality and of course severe headaches. The antibiotics improved our symptoms over the next year, but we both were still unwell. I ended up in hospital with acute pneumonia and was ridiculed because I said I had proof that I had Lyme disease.
My immune system had completely crashed and my future didn't look very bright.
Our Lyme doctor did all he could and we spent thousands of dollars trying to get better and I think that the Vitamin C IV helped.
Late last year our Lyme doctor asked us if we would like to go onto a university trial and use a promising product called 98alive. Professor Reynolds monitored us for the first 3 months and our Lyme doctor sees us regularly.
The results at first were not spectacular, but now in October 2016, we feel like we are well and truly in remission.
I don't know whether we will ever rid our bodies completely of the Borrelia bacterium as we obviously were infected so long that every organ and tissue was affected and we had chronic Lyme disease.
We both feel so well now and the only thing that has not returned to normal is the brain. When we are very tired we still forget names and words and we still suffer from fatigue, but it is not like the all-pervading brain fog that we had in the past.
We have tried many ways to get better and after using 98Alive for 10 months and seeing the amazing results for both my husband and me, I would not hesitate to recommend trying it for yourself.
I am not saying yet that we are completely cured, but I have no doubt that 98 alive is the reason my immune system is now working well and we can once again live our lives to the fullest. We have decided that we will be using this product for the rest of our lives. The side effects for me are that I don't have psoriasis any more, I have strong nails again, I have a joy of life and can do what I used to be able to do.

Dear Professor
I wanted to send you masses of gratitude for your wonderful MAC syrup. I am enjoying the newest version so much and am able to take more.
Since early June I have suffered a few health hits, 2x strokes and a relapse of Glandular Fever, however the most impressive thing is my ability to cook nightly which was previously impossible due to the need for timing and cognitive skills. I managed poached eggs last night which is do hard to time perfectly with make and mushrooms so that's a little miracle in itself. Seems small but it's huge to me.
So despite all that it feels merely like a speedbump and I truly believe I am healing. I also am certain many of the strains of Borrellia are now wiped out.
Please forgive for not being consistent with the reports, due to the brain damage (which I believe my brain will rewire around) I have trouble with follow through and some residual motor skill damage impacting my typing. So as I explained to Steve unless I act when I think I forget. It is not intentionally ungracious just an annoying residual impact of my brain damage – again it'll rewire but please bear with me until it does.
Oh and best news, less seizures, less paralysis and less sensitivity to man made smells. Which is incredible. Small miracles are happening and I am so grateful for your part in them.

All About Oxygen

Ahh. Hooray for oxygen, the element that keeps much of life on Earth humming.
Element No. 8 on the Periodic Table of the Elements is a colorless gas that makes up 21 percent of Earth's atmosphere. Because it's all around, oxygen is easy to dismiss as dull and inert; in fact, it's the most reactive of the non-metallic elements.
Earth has been oxygenated for about 2.3 billion to 2.4 billion years, and levels began to creep up at least 2.5 billion years ago, according to a 2007 NASA-funded study. No one knows quite why this lung-friendly gas suddenly became a significant part of the atmosphere, but it's possible that geologic changes on Earth led to oxygen produced by photosynthesizing organisms sticking around, rather than being consumed in geologic reactions, according to the study researchers.

Research Shows Lyme Disease Subverts the Immune System

As the seasons change in the Northern and Southern Hemisphere's, our immune system may be challenged by new threats: Influenza in the cooling Northern Hemisphere / Tick and Mosquito born infections (such as Lyme disease, Dengue, and West Nile) in the warming Southern Hemisphere.
Researchers at the University of California/Davis have discovered how Lyme disease weakens the immune system, preventing future protection and clearing the way for future infections – including influenza infections.

Lyme Disease Subverts Immune System, Prevents Future Protection
The bacteria that cause Lyme disease are able to trick an animal's immune system into not launching a full-blown immune response or developing lasting immunity to the disease, report researchers at the University of California, Davis.
The discovery may explain why some human patients remain vulnerable to repeat infections by the same strain of bacteria, especially in regions where Lyme disease is prevalent. It also suggests that blood tests may not be an effective method for detecting previous exposure to Lyme disease, by far the most common vector-borne disease in the United States and Europe.
Findings from this mouse-based study are reported July 2 in the online scientific journal PLOS Pathogens, published by the Public Library of Science.
“We demonstrated that an animal infected with Borrelia burgdorferi, the corkscrew-shaped bacteria that cause Lyme disease, launches only a short-lived immune response, and that protective immunity against repeat infections quickly wanes,” said Nicole Baumgarth, a professor in the School of Veterinary Medicine and an authority on immune response to infectious diseases at the UC Davis Center for Comparative Medicine.
“This study also suggests a possible mechanism responsible for the disappearance of antibodies following infection and subsequent treatment with antibiotics,” she said.
The Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria are transmitted to humans and animals through bites from infected ticks. Symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, fatigue and a characteristic skin rash. If left untreated, the infection can spread to the joints, heart and nervous system. About 300,000 cases of Lyme disease are diagnosed annually in the United States
The bacteria initially trigger a strong immune response in an infected animal, but findings from this study indicate that the bacteria soon cause structural abnormalities in “germinal centers” - sites in lymph nodes and other lymph tissues that are key to producing a long-term protective immune response.
For months after infection, those germinal centers fail to produce the specific cells - memory B cells and antibody-producing plasma cells - that are crucial for producing lasting immunity. In effect, the bacteria prevent the animal's immune system from forming a “memory” of the invading bacteria and launching a protective immune response against future infections.
The researchers found that following Borrelia burgdorferi infection, this process even prevented induction of strong immune responses to an influenza infection.
Funding for the study was provided by grants from National Institutes of Health and National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
